Who Owns Investigations?

Return to Program Best Practices
Created by the Security Executive Council

Some organizations spread responsibility and ownership for different types of investigations among their business functions.

In many of these organizations we have found that there is little coordination of investigative activities. This leads to what we call "investigative confusion" and increases risk and cost in the organization.

There are pros and cons to bringing all investigations under the umbrella of the security group. Even if you think it best to own all investigations, it might not be feasible given your organizational culture or structure. However, you can still play a significant and valuable role.

Whether you want to bring investigations in under your department or just help eliminate investigative confusion this resource will help you get started.
